First Night in My NYC Apartment

The minute I met with my superintendent and got the keys to the apartment, my boyfriend and I drove to IKEA and picked up the essentials.

This was my list of items that I got for the first night in my apartment:

  • Mattress topper

  • Sheets

  • Pillows

  • Hangers

  • Trash bin

  • Tall lamp (forgot lightbulbs)

  • Towels

  • Toilet paper

  • Paper towels

  • Clorox wipes

  • Shower Curtain (forgot curtain hangers)

So you may notice that this list is missing a few things that you might want to make sure you include when you move into your own apartment. These items may include an actual bed/futon, utensils, lightbulbs, a fan (for that August heatwave), and probably many other items. Well, we were limited on time when we first arrived and these items in the list above were what we could think of on the spot. Plus, IKEA needed to order the futon/couch bed that I originally wanted, so we were out of luck for the first few nights. But hey, the mattress topper wasn’t too bad!

First Night in the Apartment!

My boyfriend was kind enough to drive me all the way to Manhattan from his place in Boston to help me move into my apartment!

After having moved all my stuff into my apartment, my boyfriend and I got sandwiches from a nearby deli and also picked up a few comfort snacks to enjoy while watching TV later before crashing on the mattress topper, which was essentially a twin-sized foam pad we laid on the wood floor. It was already pretty late when we also realized that we had forgotten to pick up utensils at the store and desperately needed them for a few of the snacks we had picked up such as the ramen we had bought earlier. So, since it was only 11 pm and the city was still pretty alive, the two of us briskly walked down Broadway until we found a nice woman working as a cashier at a nearby corner-store deli. I hesitantly asked the woman for a spare set of plastic utensils and since I was thinking that there was a slim chance the woman would actually offer me anything for free, my expectations were exceeded as the woman replied with a generous gift of plastic cutlery. She even threw in a few napkins as well! I was ecstatic and feeling quite satisfied as this was one of my first interactions with a NYC local. My boyfriend and I ended the night with a relaxing Netflix and chill session, using the portable projector that I have brought with me on many of my prior traveling adventures.

Though this was a very exhausting move-in day overall, I had a great time capturing the city rain with my camera that I desperately need to replace, and got to experience the unruly drivers on the streets, making for a truly memorable day. I also got to jump over a few rats scurrying around the sidewalk towards trash bags laying on the curbside. I wouldn’t say that was one of my favorite moments, but definitely one of the more thrilling ones.

This is a photo I took as we were driving into the city!
