Working in an Opioid Rehabilitation Center

My experience in working at Recovia Rehabilitation Center in Phoenix, Arizona, gave me further appreciation for Neurobiology and the huge impact scientific research and medical advancements can have on patients’ lives.

One of the many moments at the rehabilitation center that I found to be very moving was witnessing a patient make huge strides toward recovery. He had been working with physical therapy to develop the use of his prosthetic arm. He had begun therapy five years earlier and during a session, I was shadowing, he hit a huge milestone in his therapy plan. He was able to use his prosthetic to lift himself up off the ground. This was something that he had thought he would never be able to do again.

It opened my eyes to the power of physical movement and the significance of connections between the mind and body.
